These sweets are typical of Quartu Sant'Elena, now
a large town in southern Sardinia which looks out over the Gulf of Angels.
And angelic are Quartu's cake and sweet-making traditions of which the mustazzoleddus are emblematic. These soft little mouthfuls are simply though exquisitely
made - almonds, eggs, sugar and flour, before the careful addition of vanilla
dust which give these sweets their distinctive delicacy. Each bakeress will
measure the ingredients at a glance, applying the lessons she has learnt
while watching her own mother and aunts since she was a little girl. |
